Heroes, roles, and lanes are the three ideas that unlock Dota 2 Mobile guides and real Dota 2 alike, and the Dota 2 Mobile fan project explained guide on the homepage is the place to start if you are still unsure which game this guide is about: the real Valve PC game, not the fan project.

The Three Lanes

A Dota 2 map has three lanes running between the two bases: the safe lane, the middle lane, and the off lane. The safe lane is the easier lane for a team's carry, because it is closer to that team's base and easier to retreat from. The middle lane is usually played solo, so its hero gains levels fast. The off lane is the hard lane, played against the other team's carry, where survival and disruption matter more than farming.

Between the lanes sits the jungle, where neutral creatures live. Jungling, ganking from the jungle, and controlling vision with wards all shape which lanes win and which lose.

Roles in a Team

Carries start weaker and grow stronger as a match goes on, often needing gold and protection early. A classic carry example is Juggernaut, a hero built around fast attacks and a powerful spinning attack. Mid laners take the middle lane alone and aim for fast levels and early impact around the map.

Supports do the unglamorous work that wins matches: protecting the carry, placing vision, and setting up fights with disables and slows. A classic support example is Crystal Maiden, whose freezing abilities slow and lock down enemies while her team follows up. Hard supports often end a match with the least gold, and the best teams value them anyway. For Dota 2 Mobile readers, the same roles are a useful way to read any match, even though the complete game itself lives on PC.

Why Team Play Decides Matches

Roles only work together. A carry without a support dies early. A support without a carry to protect has nothing to enable. The comparison in real Dota 2 on PC against the fan mobile project notes that this team logic is hard to reproduce outside the real game, and new players should learn it on PC. If you are ready to try, getting started with real Dota 2 on PC lays out a calm first week.

Quick Answers

What are the three lanes?

The safe lane, the middle lane, and the off lane, plus the jungle between them.

Carries grow stronger over a match, mid laners take the middle lane solo for fast levels, offlaners play the hard lane, and supports protect and enable teammates.

What decides most matches?

Team play, lane control, and timing. One strong hero rarely wins alone.
